At least 12 killed in stampede at Hindu shrine

Police said that at least twelve pilgrims were killed and over a dozen others were hurt in Saturday’s stampede at the Hindu shrine in Kashmir.

Senior police officer Mukesh Singh stated that 12 pilgrims were killed and 14 others were hurt in an avalanche at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in the early hours of today.

He stated that all of the victims were taken to hospital.

According to another official, the stampede started when devotees, who came to commemorate the start of the New Year began to enter the Vaishno Dev Bhawan shrine.

“Extremely shocked by the death of Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan’s victims in a stampede.” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a condolence message.

A high-ranking official confirmed that the inquiry had been requested.
