WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The chief executives of AT&T (NYSE:) and Verizon Communications (NYSE:) A request from U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg for a delay in the Jan. 5 launch of 5G wireless service was denied by the exchange. This decision is based on safety concerns regarding aviation.

Buttigieg and Federal Aviation Administration chief Steve Dickson had asked AT&T CEO John Stankey and Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg for a commercial deployment delay of no more than two weeks.

A joint statement Sunday by the wireless firms stated they wouldn’t deploy 5G near airports for six month, but that any longer limitation on C-Band spectrum would be unacceptable. The proposal by the Transportation Department would have been “an irresponsible abdication” of operating control necessary to build world-class, globally competitive communication networks.
