Officials from the city said Tuesday that a suspect in the incident was expected to appear before the court.
The New Wing, which houses the lower chamber of the assembly’s assembly, suffered a partial collapse after an initial fire. Partially collapsed the roof of the Old Wing which houses the National Council of Provinces’ upper chamber. It dates back to 1884.
The new flame broke out Monday.
According to Cape Town officials, the fire was put out around midnight. As they try to extinguish the hot spots, teams are working room-by-room through the maze-like structure.
They said that this is a long process as certain rooms will need to be stripped of their wooden cladding to reveal any hidden hot spots.
The court was expecting to see a 49 year-old suspect charged with theft and arson.
According to Hawks Police, the suspected had allegedly gained access to parliament via an office window.
Although the fire consumed the building, officials said they were able to save important sections such as the museum that contained artworks and cultural heritage objects. They also saved an embroided tapestry telling the tale of Eastern Cape from the Old Assembly Building on the ground floor.
