WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States will bring up election interference and arms agreements with Ukraine at next week’s security talks, Jen Psaki, White House spokesperson, said Wednesday.

Psaki stated that U.S. delegations would raise concerns about Russia’s actions in Europe next week during talks.

As Washington attempts to prevent Moscow from invading Ukraine, U.S. officials will join three talks that involve Russia next week. First, the U.S. will be represented by Wendy Sherman (Deputy Secretary of State), in Geneva on Monday.

The NATO-Russia Council will meet in Brussels on January 12, while a third meeting in Vienna, Jan. 13, will include the Organization of Security and Co-operation in Europe. It is a group which includes Russia and the United States.

A NATO-Ukraine Council meeting will be held on Tuesday at NATO Headquarters, Brussels.

Russian President Vladimir Putin requested legally binding guarantees from NATO that NATO won’t be extended further and that Ukraine would not become a member of the transatlantic alliance.

Psaki stated that the presence of the United States at the talks would cause a number of concerns over Russian behavior such as its seizure in Crimea in 2014. The incursion into Georgia by the Soviet Union, attempted poisoning opposition figures and violations of agreements such as the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

Psaki claimed that Russia invaded two countries in the last two decades, interfered and tried to assassinate foreigners on their soils, violated international arms control arrangements, and has used chemical weapons.

She stated that “We, our allies, will raise those issues, along with other issues, with Russia in days and week ahead and definitely as part of these negotiations.”

On Sunday, President Joe Biden assured Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that economic sanctions would be imposed on Russia and the allies of those countries. He also promised that the United States and its allies and partners would do “nothing about you without you.”

Psaki stated that Biden had made it clear that there are some areas between Russia and NATO, that some progress can be made but not all of Putin’s demands.

She stated that she was not going to respond to each proposal point-by-point and did not expect her to do so in the negotiations. “In our experience, you can’t really make progress by publicly negotiating and many of these proposals don’t deserve such a response.”
