Amsterdam retains share-trading supremacy over London a year after Brexit -Breaking

LONDON, (Reuters) – Amsterdam finished 2021 as Europe’s largest share trading centre. It held its lead over London despite British attempts to make their equity markets more appealing after Brexit.

EU-denominated stock trading in Euros by EU investors was stopped in Britain after the country exited the European Union Dec. 31, 2020. Most of the trading moved to Amsterdam where pan-European Euronext and the new post-Brexit operations at Cboe Global Markets are based. London Stock Exchange Group’s (LON:) Turquoise.

Cboe Global Markets figures on Thursday showed that Amsterdam’s average daily trading last month was 8.97 billion euro ($10.15 trillion), which is more than London’s 8.32 miliarde euros.

It was able to regain lost ground with a deal with Switzerland that allowed Swiss share trading in London to be resumed, however it wasn’t enough to keep the top spot long-term as other initiatives didn’t gain any traction.

The listing of special purpose acquisition corporations or SPACs in Britain was made easier by the United Kingdom’s August decision. But, there were only two SPACs listed by November.

Euronext reported that it has 22 SPAC listing updates, which accounts for almost half the number of new listings in Europe.

In an effort to attract more technology companies that Wall Street is so successful at attracting, the Financial Conduct Authority has introduced more flexible rules nL8N2SN25Q last month for listing on LSEG’s premium segment.

LSEG reported last week that 122 companies were listed on the exchange by 2021. This was its highest year since 2007.

Euronext’s European exchanges include Amsterdam. Last week, it reported that the company also enjoyed a record-breaking year, with 212 listings, raising $29.42 trillion.
