Greece extends restrictions to curb Omicron variant -Breaking

ATHENS (Reuters – Greece is increasing restrictions on bars and restaurants in order to reduce the Omicron virus, the dominant variant in Greece. It was responsible for a spike in coronavirus infection in Greece in recent weeks.

Last month’s Christmas holiday festivities saw the country place restrictions on nightclubs, bars and restaurants. These measures were to be lifted on January 17.

These restrictions that have caused bars, restaurants, and nightclubs to close at midnight with no customers or music will continue until Wednesday, according to health officials. In supermarkets and in transport, a double mask is still required.

Omicron variant is highly contagious and has been declared dominant by authorities after being first identified in early December.

On Tuesday, Greece recorded 32,694 new cases and 80 deaths related to the pandemic. This brings the total number infected since then to 1,568 215 and the death count to 21,559.

The record for coronavirus-related infections was 50,126 per day. This occurred on January 4.
