(Reuters) -A new record of 14.1 million Americans signed up for insurance coverage since November’s 2022 open enrollment, according to the U.S. department of health.

On a conference call, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that the number included ten millions people living in the 33 U.S. States using the federal exchange and four million residents of states with their own exchanges.

This January 8th enrollment rate represents 21% more plan options than last year.

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra responded to a question about whether or not the government can extend enrollment.

He said, “I would not be surprised if the President instructs us continue to search for ways to ensure that Americans receive the coverage they require.”

The open enrollment period began November 1, and will close January 15. In September, the government extended open enrollment by one month to Jan. 15. This was to allow people to have more time for review and selection of health plans.

Becerra stated, “With Omicron and with COVID still there, we must do everything possible to provide people that protection.”
