‘Emergency’: Wikipedia Editors Vote Against Classifying NFTs as Art

An erudition of editors on Wikipedia—a free user-generated encyclopedia—decided against designating nonfungible tokens (NFT) as a form of art and agreed to put the matter on hold until later.

A poll was held on December 31st and the discussion centered around the most expensive art sales made by living artists. Also, it was decided whether or not nonfungible tokenized art sales (NFT), should be classified either as art sales or NFT sales.

Wikipedia cannot decide what art is, so it makes the job much easier to put NFTs in their own lists.

A lot of discussion revolved around whether or not an NFT was reflective of the art. There was much disagreement among editors about the definitions. Some believed there wasn’t enough data to make any conclusions.

A poll revealed that five editors were opposed to the addition of NFTs to art sales. One editor was in favour. On Wednesday, the decision was made to take sales such as Pak’s NFT collection worth $91 million and Beeples NFT collection of $69 million off the top art sales lists and to revive the discussion at a later time.

Wikipedia says that consensus doesn’t require unanimous consent or voting. To reach a judgement, the group should consider whether all issues that have been raised by editors are within the guidelines of the platform.

This consensus doesn’t bode well for certain NFT leaders. Duncan Cock Foster (the twin brother of Nifty Gateway founder) calls this an “Art Emergency.”
