Nasdaq short interest down 0.07% in mid-September By Reuters

(Reuters) – Short interest on the Nasdaq fell 0.07% in the first two weeks of September, the exchange said on Friday.

The short interest in the Nasdaq fell to approximately 11.014 billion shares by September 15, from 11.023 trillion shares at Aug. 31.

Short-term investors who buy securities borrow shares, then purchase them at a lower cost, then return the money to their lender.

You can also shorten shares as part of an hedging strategy.
