REUTERS/Lindsey Wasson/File Photograph(Reuters) -Boeing Co announced Wednesday that it incurred a $3.5Billion charge for the fourth quarter. This was due to delivery delays in its 787 Dreamliner, which is currently experiencing problems.
Premarket trading saw the company’s share price fall 0.3% as it lost 2.3% after posting quarterly profits.
Boeing (NYSE) is dependent upon the widebody jet to help it recover from the pandemic, as well as from a safety problem caused by two crashes of its 737 MAX airplanes.
Manufacturing flaws in Dreamliner’s manufacturing caused structural problems that delayed production and led to costly inspections and repairs costing the company hundreds and millions.
Reuters reports that the US regulators are reviewing production issues and the U.S. is expected to freeze 787 delivery until April. Meanwhile, Europe’s regulatory authorities continue pushing back against designs for larger 777X aircraft.
According to a memo Reuters received, Boeing’s Chief Executive Officer Dave Calhoun said that while we would never disappoint our customers and not meet their expectations, “the work we’re doing now will help build stability as well predictability moving forward.”
According to the U.S. planemaker, low production and excessive rework were expected for the 787. This would result in an additional $1 billion in abnormal costs.
According to the company, its core operating loss for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31 was $4.54 billion. This compares with an $8.38 billion loss one year prior. The loss resulted from a $6.5 million charge for delaying the 777X aircraft program.
Boeing still generated positive cash flow for the fourth quarter. This was its first positive quarter since the beginning of 2019, thanks to 737 MAX delivery as air travel recovers from the pandemic.
