Elon Musk’sSpaceX set a new orbital record for its annual launch last year and is looking to continue the explosive pace in 2022, to an average of one per week.

On Thursday, Dr. Sandra Magnus of NASA’s oversight panel revealed to the group that her private company has an ambitious 52-launch manifest for 2022.

Magnus (an astronaut and ex-executive Director of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) said that it was an “incredible pace” during the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel meeting of NASA.

SpaceX completed 31 successful launches in 2021. That beats its prior record of 26 in 2020. SpaceX provides context. represented about a fifth of the world’s successful orbital rocket launches last year – with the company roughly keeping pace with China.

SpaceX is currently at a week-to-week average pace for the start of 2019, with three Falcon 9 launch successes so far, and two more planned before the end. SpaceX has many Falcon Heavy rockets that will be lifted off in 2022, along with its Falcon 9 launch.

Magnus has not specified whether SpaceX’s 52 planned launches are included in the SpaceX schedule. includes test flights of its Starship prototype rockets. CNBC reached out to SpaceX and ASAP for clarification.

SpaceX has maintained a rapid launch rate by partially reusing its Falcon 9 rocket boosters. After launches, it also recovers half its nosecone.

In addition to cost savings – the company’s leadership has said reusing rockets can bring launches down to below $30 million each, from a typical $60 million to $90 million price tag – SpaceX reuses rockets as a way to increase its launch rate without significantly increasing production. For example, the Falcon 9 booster that SpaceX launched the Transporter-3 mission with earlier this month was reused – for a 10th time in under 20 months since its debut.

SpaceX has a full schedule for missions in 2022, which includes crewed spaceflight for NASA. Magnus praised SpaceX’s pace but also called for safety and caution.

Magnus stated that NASA and SpaceX must ensure their respective attentions and priorities are focused on NASA’s missions and that the resources necessary to sustain this pace are available.
