PARIS, (Reuters) – French investigators will soon travel to Saudi Arabia as part of their investigation into the Dakar rally’s incidents that were committed against French citizens.

French Anti-terrorism Prosecutors opened an investigation into the explosion that occurred under the support vehicle during the rally in December. Philippe Boutron, a French driver of the race car was severely injured.

According to Reuters, witnesses also reported that a support vehicle belonging to Camelia Liparoti (a Franco-Italian competitor in rally) caught fire.

French radio RMC reported that the driver had heard a “boom”, before the fire started.

Source said that “A mission will be planned for very soon.” He also said that contrary to French media claims, the Saudis “have never been resistive” to cooperation.

Sources said that there wasn’t an urgent need for French investigators in the area because they had started their investigation listening to French witnesses when they returned from Saudi Arabia.

Source said that the probe has now ended.

Jean-Yves Le Drian is the French Foreign Minister. He stated “there were hypotheses” that Boutron was hurt in an attack on terrorists.

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister stated that a preliminary investigation into the initial blast did not raise any criminal suspicions.

Sources said that Saudi Arabia is still firm in its position at the moment.

The second incident was mentioned by some witnesses, according to the source, but no further information was provided. Liparoti posted on Instagram, at the beginning of January that it is not known where the fire originated.
