MEXICO CITY (Reuters – Mexican President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador announced Monday that Mexican authorities will be reviewing a decision by the U.S. to temporarily suspend avocado shipments due to security concerns from Michoacan, the west state.
U.S. embassies in Washington stated that the U.S. avocado inspection programme in Michoacan has been temporarily suspended until security issues are addressed. Although the U.S. does not block exports, officials from the U.S. must inspect any avocados sent to them.
Lopez Obrador stated that the matter could have been influenced, but he did not give details.
He said, “The truth is there’s an economic and a commercial interest behind them.” There’s also a political mindset.
The U.S. has recently decided to pursue talks with Mexico regarding its environmental obligations in a North American Trade Agreement, which includes the protection of critically endangered vaquita poise.
The Mexican-American relations were then “very good”, he said.
