(Reuters). A six-year-old girl, who was last seen in her bedroom in the basement of a New York house, has been discovered alive two years later. Police believe that she was taken by her non-custodial biological family.

Paislee Shultis was found by officers in Saugerties on Monday. She had been missing for two years from Spencer, New York. The girl disappeared 180 (290) miles to her west.

Police believed that Kimberly Cooper (33), and Kirk Shultis Jr. (32) had taken her. According to police, the couple had no custody.

Police received information about the whereabouts of the girl on Monday and were able to obtain a warrant for their search. Police said that they were called to the boy’s grandfather to search for the girl. After searching the home for approximately an hour, they finally found her hidden under a staircase leading down to the basement.

Police said that the steps were removed and the mother and daughter, Kimberly, were discovered hiding in the wet and dark enclosure.

Paislee was brought to the police headquarters, where she was examined by paramedics, according to the Daily Freeman. Paislee was in excellent health and was given to her legal guardian.

Kirk Shultis, the girl’s grandfather and parents were also arrested by police. Both were charged with custodial interference and endangering a child’s welfare.

Kirk Shultis Jr. was interviewed by police several times after the disappearance of the little girl. Officers asked him to deny knowing where she was and he said he hadn’t seen her child.
