These numbers are now at their highest level since 2005, when data began being collected.
Sexual assault and harassment in the U.S. military is largely underreported, according to the military itself, and the Pentagon’s handling of it has come under renewed scrutiny.
The Uniform Code of Military Justice makes sexual harassment illegal. This executive order was signed by President Joe Biden in 2012.
Dec. saw the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act, which included major reforms to the military justice systems. The bill would give military commanders the power to make decisions about whether to pursue cases of sexual assault and rape. However, it has been criticized by activists as not being sufficient.
According to the annual report, there were 131 sexual assault reports during the 2020-2021 academic school year. This is an increase from the 88 reported the previous year. However, there was very little learning in person during 2019-2020 due to the coronavirus epidemic.
The 2018-2019 academic calendar year saw 122 reports.
Last year, the U.S. Air Force Academy received the most reports with 52. West Point had 46 and Annapolis’ Naval academy 33.
