(Reuters) -The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S. Health regulators may approve a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine this fall. Sources familiar with the matter were cited by the Wall Street Journal.

A request for comment was not answered by the FDA immediately.

In an effort to offer better protection against Omicron variant, the agency cut last month the time it took to receive a booster dose from Moderna and BioNTech.

Planning is still at an early stage. Autorization will depend on decisions about whether the second booster should only be approved for certain age groups or all adults. Also, whether it should target Omicron, or be different, according to the report.

The statement added that there was no final decision and it might be necessary to provide booster shots earlier in the event of a new version.

On Friday, the United States recorded 2,323 deaths from COVID-19, which brings their total to 936.523.
