(Reuters) – Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who sued the NFL and three teams in early February over alleged race bias, has been named senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team said on Saturday.

Flores, who was fired in January by the Dolphins, later filed suit alleging that Flores had discriminated against Black candidates to top-level coaching and managerial positions.

Flores is Black and also accuses Stephen Ross of giving him $100,000 to win a 2019 draft pick. Ross claimed Flores was refusing to throw the games which eventually cost Ross his job.

Mike Tomlin, Steelers’ head coach said that Brian Flores is a great addition to our coaching team. He has a history of teaching and developing defensive players in the NFL. Brian’s track record speaks for itself. I am looking forward to his contributions to our team.”

Flores’ firing in Miami was quite surprising considering that the Dolphins had won eight of nine of their last nine games following a 1-7 start to the 2021 National Football League season.

Flores sued not only the NFL and Dolphins but also the New York Giants and Denver Broncos. Flores claimed Flores conducted interviews to fill vacant head coaches positions. This was in order to comply with a league rule that requires minority candidates be considered for coaching or staff posts.

Flores’ claims have been denied by all parties, including the NFL, Dolphins Broncos and Giants.

Flores attorneys stated that the lawsuit would continue.

Attorneys Douglas H. Wigdor, John Elefterakis stated in a statement that they congratulated coach Flores for his new role with the Steelers.

Flores has now shifted his attention to his new role, but will still continue his action on race discrimination so there is real change in the NFL.
