WASHINGTON (Reuters] – Friday’s White House request to Congress for $6.4 billion of assistance to Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion was granted. The aid included $2.9B in security assistance and $3.5B in defense, the Biden administration said and congressional aides.
“In a recent conversation with lawmakers, the administration identified the need for additional U.S. humanitarian, security, and economic assistance to Ukraine and Central European partners due to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion,” an official from the White House Office of Management and Budget said.
According to congressional aides, the administration requested the briefing on Friday for members of Congress leadership and the relevant committees.
One of the congressional advisers stated that Congress would be considering the $2.9 billion in State Department funding and USAID funding as an emergency bill. Funding for the Pentagon will then be considered later.
These funds will be added to the $650million in security assistance, $52 million in humanitarian aid and $1 billion sovereign loan guarantee that the United States announced last week.
An official from the Biden administration stated that the discussion about funding will change depending on how the situation is.
