There is still a lot of work to be done in the United States before this pandemic ends and normalcy returns. The death rate from Covid-19 remains higher than that of seasonal respiratory viruses like the flu. This was according to experts.

Dozens of scientists, doctors, and experts in public health are involved. in a 136-page reportThe U.S. can now transition to a new standard in which it can manage Covid with minimal disruption to its daily lives. The experts say Covid continues to cause an “intolerable amount of death” in the U.S., even though it has been reduced over time.

This report is coming as leaders in the country are easing public health precautions in the wake of a sharp decline in Covid infections, hospitalizations and other complications since the height of this year’s omicron waves. In his State of the Union address last week, President Joe Biden stated that the country was returning to normalcy. He also encouraged Americans to get back to work. Under the new Covid guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 90% Americans reside in places where they are allowed to take off their masks.

“With 75% of adult Americans fully vaccinated and hospitalizations down by 77%, most Americans can remove their masks, return to work, stay in the classroom, and move forward safely,” the president said.

New Jersey’s public health emergency, which was created in response to omicron on Monday, has been ended. New York City is now free from its school mask mandate and indoor-dining vaccine requirements. New Jersey and New York are two of the worst-hit areas of the country in this spring’s Covid wave and in the wake of the omicron spike.

The report warns against complacency and inaction, as well as “premature triumphalism”. Without emergency mitigation, 1,150 people per week died from flu or RSV in years past. Experts estimate that Covid has a death rate of 10x higher, with approximately 12,000 people dying from the virus in just a few weeks. The CDC reports that Covid has claimed the lives of more than 9,000 victims in just the past week.

The report states that a potentially devastating scenario in which 264,000 people die of Covid could occur between now and March 2023. This is even assuming a new, highly contagious form emerges. But even this grim scenario, it is only about half of what was experienced in previous years during the U.S. Pandemic. It’s largely because of higher levels of natural infection and vaccination, as well as the fact that there has been a greater level of immunity. The report suggests that the death rate from Covid in the next year could be as low at 20,000.

According to the report, major investment should be made by the U.S. in order to manage Covid better moving forward. According to the report the White House needs to create a National Security Council post to help the President prepare for and monitor pandemic risks. A deputy assistant in biosecurity would coordinate the efforts to combat anti-science information about vaccines.

A multi-drug oral combination of antivirals should be developed by the United States. It is similar in concept to Operation Warp Speed. As the virus develops resistance to all single drugs, it will need to be implemented. To track Covid variants as well as other respiratory viruses, the U.S. must improve its wastewater and air surveillance.

The report included recommendations for public health investments and health-care workforce expansion, research into Covid long term and improved air ventilation codes.

Biden stated that the U.S. was taking measures to prepare for another Covid variant during the State of the Union speech. Biden stated that the U.S. could deploy new vaccines in less than 100 days, if another Covid variant is found. He also revealed a program where people can get the oral antiviral medication Pfizer at no charge from pharmacies or community health centers if they test positive for Covid.

It is impossible to predict when a new variation will be available. Biden indicated that they can guarantee you that we will do all in our power to prepare for it if it happens.

The number of new Covid cases in the U.S. has dropped 94% since January’s pandemic. A CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins University data showed that the U.S. recorded a daily average number of 46,000 Covid cases per Sunday. That’s down 94% from Jan. 15 when it reached a peak of 802,000. According to the CDC, hospitalizations have fallen 79% since the peak of the omicron waves.
