TAIPEI (Reuters – China is busy ensuring stability for a crucial Communist Party congress at end of the year, where President Xi Jinping may get a third term. The government in Taipei stated on Wednesday that Taiwan is not likely to see China escalate tensions.

China claims Taiwan as its territory. Taiwan has increased its alert since Russia invaded Ukraine. It is wary that Beijing might make a move at the same moment. However, it has not reported any unusual Chinese military moves.

According to Taiwan’s China-policy-making Mainland Affairs Council, Beijing will continue “increase its unilateral attacks” on the island in a report submitted to Parliament about the security consequences of war.

It stated that the priority was to stabilize the external and internal environment prior to the 20th Party Congress to make it possible for Xi to be reappointed, not escalate tensions immediately.

It is expected that the congress will take place at the end of this year. Xi is highly anticipated to be confirmed as China’s leader for a third time, something unprecedented in modern times.

China’s military activities around Taiwan have increased over the last two years, mainly by sending fighter planes to its air defense identification zone.

These incursions are called “grey zones” by Taiwan. They were designed to assess pilots’ reaction times, and to wear them out while they have to constantly scramble.

According to the Mainland Affairs Council, China’s inability to condemn Russia’s invasion or impose sanctions against the country is a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.

The Taiwan Strait will be also vulnerable to it, the report added.

China never gave up the right to use force in order to control Taiwan. A standoff between them remains dangerously volatile. China does not recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty.

On Wednesday morning, Wang Yang, fourth in command of the Communist Party said that “uncertainties” and “instabilities” had grown over Taiwan Strait.

Wang, China’s highest political advisor body, said that “But the times and momentum are always on our side”,

“We are able to deal with complex situations because of our overall strength and certain-win confidence.”
