(Reuters) – Lyft Inc (NASDAQ:) announced Wednesday that rider in America, other than those in New York City, will have to pay an additional 55c for their commute. The ride-hailing company is trying to offset the effects of higher gas prices.

As a protest to high fuel prices and Western sanctions against Russia which have led to a rise in oil production, gig-worker companies are now imposing surcharges on drivers who use social media.

Lyft stated that the new fuel surcharge policy goes into effect next week, and will continue in force for at most 60 days. Lyft added that money will directly go to drivers.

This move is similar to that made by Uber (NYSE:), where customers will have to pay a surcharge either 45cs or 55cs for each trip.

DoorDash announced on Tuesday that U.S.-based food-delivery firm would offer a 10% cashback to its delivery partners for gasoline purchases made beginning March 17.
