(Reuters) – California fire crews have so far succeeded in protecting a group of ancient giant sequoias threatened by a wildfire raging through a national park in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, authorities said on Monday.

Four Guardsmen are the name given to the four sequoias. They have not been affected by the KNP Complex Fire, which ignited earlier this month by lightning and has grown in the Sequoia National Park Giant Forest.

KNP Complex fire spokesperson Mark Garrett spoke out about the Guardsman as well the General Sherman nearby, which is the largest sequoia tree in the world.

Giant Forest is a forest of around 2,000 trees. The entrance to it can be seen by the Guardsmen tree. It is approximately 2.5 miles (4 km northeast) of General Sherman. At 275 feet (83m), it’s about 20 stories tall.

Officials from parks said that the fire-resistant covers placed around their bases keep them safe from the flames.

California currently has 13 wildfires, including the KNP Complex. California usually experiences its peak fire seasons in fall and late summer. This year, California is expected to witness more landscapes being destroyed than in the previous year. It was also the most destructive year for the state.

Firefighters searched the KNP Complex for sparks and extinguished them. Meanwhile, tree-fellers cleared and cut down dead trees and other vegetation. Garrett stated that the National Guard was also working in the region to clean up after prescribed fires.

The KNP Complex, about 250 miles southeast of Sacramento, the state’s capital, had burned some 23,700 acres (9608 hectares) as of Monday, according to the federal Inciweb https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/article/7838/66447 fire information system. Since Sunday, the fire, still at 0%, has grown by approximately 1,700 acres.

According to fire officials, the weather forecast for the coming days could hinder efforts to contain the flames.
