Toyota Motor on Sunday unveiled its new 2022 Tundra pickup with a bolder look, new technologies and more power. Many truck owners may be surprised to learn that the extra power won’t come from a V-8.

Instead of exclusively offering the pickup with a V-8 engine, the Japanese automaker will offer two versions of a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine, including a hybrid that can produce up to 437 horsepower – 56 more than the current V-8 – and 583 foot-pounds of torque, a 45% increase than the 2021 Tundra.

In a statement, Mike Sweers (senior vice president, Toyota product development office) stated that they took a new, transformative approach to truck development. He also said that it was necessary to reconsider many of the things previously done.

Using twin-turbo V-6 engines has proven successful in pickup trucks. Ford Motor stunned many by introducing such as engine, which it calls EcoBoost, into its best-selling F-150 pickup in 2011. Ford added other Ecoboost engine to the truck line-up in surprise.

Automakers have increasingly started to offer alternative powertrain options ahead of an influx of all-electric pickups in the market in the coming years. Ford’s new Maverick pickup offers both a F-150 hybrid and a standard-hybrid F-150, while Ram Trucks has a 1500 mild hybrid.

“Buyers in general are becoming a little bit more accepting of alternative, powertrains” said IHS Markit principal automotive analyst Stephanie Brinley. You can operate the truck as you wish, provided the engine or propulsion system is adequate. They’re open to V-8s.

Apart from the engine upgrade, Tundra has a more rugged design that the existing pickup. It features an enormous front grille which occupies most of the vehicle’s front. You will also notice a more sleeker design and smaller headlights.

On the interior, the Tundra has an available 14-inch touchscreen and increased safety and convenience features, including a new infotainment system.

While the Detroit automakers dominate the full-size pickup truck market in the U.S., Toyota has achieved some success, consistently selling more than 100,000 of the vehicles each year. This compares to Ford’s F-Series pickups that have sold between 800,000 and 900,000 in recent years.

It can be a good truck, but the Tundra will win. 3 [in the market]. Brinley stated that they don’t have the ability to go after Ram and Chevrolet volumes.

Toyota has not released pricing or fuel economy information for 2022 Tundra. It is anticipated that it will go on sale in the second half of this year. Its current starting price is $34,000 for a standard model, and $50,000. For an off-road version of the TRD PRO, it costs $50,000. It gets 13 mpg in the city, and 17 on the highway.

The Tundra is produced by Toyota at the same plant as the Tacoma midsize pickup truck in San Antonio Texas.
