WASHINGTON (Reuters) – General Motors Co (NYSE:) is set to name a senior U.S Senate aide and former top auto safety official as its new regulatory affairs chief as the largest U.S. automaker expands its electric vehicle plans, sources told Reuters.

They announced that GM would appoint David Strickland to the role of vice president for global regulation affairs starting Oct. 1.

Strickland, who is the current staff director for U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, was previously chief of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

GM is working aggressively on self-driving cars and has stated that it aspires not to sell gasoline-powered light-duty passenger cars after 2035.
