PARIS (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron will next week send his ambassador back to the United States after President Joe Biden agreed that consulting France before announcing a security pact with Australia could have prevented a diplomatic row, said Macron’s office.

After the United States signed a deal to acquire nuclear submarines with Australia, the United Kingdom and France, said Macron’s office. This was in response to Canberra scrapping a $40 billion French submarine contract.

Macron and Biden spoke on Wednesday by phone. The two leaders decided to start in-depth discussions to restore trust, Macron’s Elysee division said. Macron and Biden will be meeting in Europe by the end October.

Macron’s office added that the U.S. has also promised to support counter-terrorism efforts led by European nations within Africa’s Sahel area.
