WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Thursday that Washington would soon release a new comprehensive strategy for the wider Indo-Pacific region.

Biden’s administration hopes to move away from Afghanistan and focus its national security priorities of countering China’s rise.

Blinken spoke at the beginning of a 10-nation meeting on the sidelines U.N. General Assembly. He said that the U.S. strategy will emerge this fall and builds on “our shared vision of a region free, open and interconnected. Responsive and secure.”

It will be a reflection of the importance of Southeast Asia to the Indo-Pacific and the vital role ASEAN plays in shaping the future.
