White House analysis says wealthy Americans pay far less in taxes than others By Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House on Thursday published a new economic analysis that showed how the wealthiest Americans pay far less in taxes than others – an effort to bolster President Joe Biden’s push to increase taxes on the rich to fund his economic agenda.
Biden posted on Twitter Wednesday (NYSE:) that he was sick of giant corporations and the super-wealthy not paying their fair share. A $3.5 trillion bill is being proposed by Biden that will increase federal efforts in fighting climate change, lower the costs of child care, and reduce poverty. The bill would allow corporations and super-rich to pay more tax.
The White House analysis from two economists suggests that the wealthiest 400 households in the country — those with net worth ranging between $2.1 billion and $160 billion — pay an effective federal income tax rate of just over 8 percent per year on average.
When accounting for the increasing value of their wealth and income, it shows that these top 400 households made a total $1.8 trillion, and they paid an estimated $149 Billion in federal individual income taxes.
This analysis by the White House of what billionaires and super-rich pay in this country was far less than other studies.
The White House’s calculation of the tax rate uses income data from wealthy individuals, as well as wealth and taxes from the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances and Internal Revenue Service.
New York Times first published the analysis.
