(Reuters) – California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a $15 billion package that will fund programs to tackle drought and climate change in the state after a devastating wildfire season.

Newsom’s office released a statement Thursday claiming that 24 bills were signed by Newsom, which focused on climate change, climate clean energy and droughts. The funding is the largest in California’s climate history.

California’s biggest portion, $5.2Billion, will fund drought relief programs and expansion of water supplies. To address climate change risks and invest in projects that can mitigate extreme heat or deal with rising sea level, the package contains $3.7 billion.

Newsom’s office stated that $1.5 million will be spent on reducing wildfire danger in forests.

In California, President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to climate change mitigation. He visited the state and did an aerial tour in one of California’s most severe fire seasons.

California experiences its highest fire season between late summer and autumn. California is expected to witness more destruction this year than in the previous year, the worst on record.

According to a U.S. government document, Tuesday’s report stated that human-caused global warming has made the drought worse in the Southwest United States. The area is experiencing the most severe drought since records began.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this region experienced its third highest daily average temperature since records began at the close of the 19th Century.

Extreme drought conditions will likely worsen and continue to exist “until climate mitigation measures are taken and regional warming trends reversed.”
