(Reuters) – Rio Tinto (NYSE:) and Canadian union Unifor have reached a labour agreement in principle for the global miner’s operations in the western Canadian province of British Columbia, the company said on Sunday.
After weeks of talks, the parties reached a second round agreement after negotiations on proposed changes in workers’ retirement benefits.
Unifor is a union representing about 900 workers from the miner’s Kitimat aluminium smelting and Kemano power generating plants. It had initiated a strike at BC Works after the second round of negotiations failed.
Rio Tinto released a statement online on Sunday saying that both parties were satisfied with the agreement.
Rio said that both parties did not reveal details until Unifor had presented the deal to its members. Rio also stated that they were seeking a vote to ratify the agreement. Rio indicated that the vote is likely to take place in the next few days.
