Elon Musk reassured Tesla‘s commitment to China, saying the automaker will continue to expand its investments in the country.

Musk made the comments in an audio stream of question-and-answer questions at the World Internet Conference hosted by China’s Cyberspace Administration of China.

It’s the second time this month Musk was highly complimentary of the nation that’s imperative to his electric vehicle company, saying it’s a “global leader digitalization.” Two weeks ago, Musk said that Chinese carmakers are the most competitive in the entire world during a prerecorded stream from the World New Energy Vehicle Congress.

Musk made the following statement in the video: “My honest observation, China spends lots of resources and effort applying the latest digital technology in different industries including the auto industry. Making China a global leader for digitalization.” “Tesla will continue to expand our investment and R&D efforts in China.”

Tesla has been trying to improve its reputation in China after a slew of negative press. Tesla has been subject to regulatory scrutiny regarding its privacy, as well as a few recalls in China. Beijing had reportedly restricted or banned the use of Tesla’s electric vehicles by some state and military personnel.

Musk spoke out against data protection and detailed what kinds of data were stored locally.

Musk stated that Tesla is happy to have a variety of data protection laws and regulations released.

To localize data from all aspects of our business, such as sales and production, Tesla has established a China data center. Without any transfer to overseas, all personally identifiable information will be stored in China by security companies. Data can only be transferred internationally in rare circumstances, such as spare parts orders received from overseas.

The company broke ground on a major Shanghai factory in 2019. Tesla sold 44,264 China-made vehicles in August, including 31,379 for export. The August sales were up from 32,968 Chinese-made vehicles in July and 33.155 in June.
