(Reuters) -Instagram has hit pause on a new app that it is creating for kids, the Facebook-owned photo-sharing app said on Monday, in a move that comes amid growing opposition for the project.

Instagram Kids had been expected to need parental permission in order to use the service. It also promised to provide safe, age-appropriate, non-advertising content. But, U.S. lawmakers have asked for Instagram Kids to cease its launch plans due to safety concerns.

Fairplay, an advocacy group for children, said Josh Golin that they won’t cease pressing Facebook (NASDAQ.) until they pull the plug.

In a post https://, Instagram stated that it believed building Instagram Kids was the best thing. However, the company was halting work to improve its parental oversight tools.

According to it, “The truth is that most kids have access to the internet. We believe that designing age-appropriate experiences for children is better than our current situation.”

The Wall Street Journal published a report https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-knows-instagram-is-toxic-for-teen-girls-company-documents-show-11631620739 earlier this month, focusing on data suggesting Instagram had a harmful effect on teenagers, particularly teen girls and that Facebook had made minimal efforts to address the issue. Facebook claims the report is incorrect.
