WARSAW (Reuters) – Poland’s interior minister said on Monday material related to Islamic extremism had been found in the phones of migrants crossing its border with Belarus and he called for a 60-day extension to a state of emergency along the frontier.

An emergency was declared by the European Union member country at the beginning of September in response to an influx of migrants that Polish and EU officials attributed to Belarus. Right-wing groups are critical of Poland’s nationalist government over how it treated migrants. Five people have been killed at the frontier.

Mariusz Kaminski (Interior Minister) stated that “the situation is” extremely tension.

Polish officials presented material that they claimed were text messages and images related to Islamic extremism.

Reuters was unable to confirm or deny the authenticity of these messages and images.

The opposition in Poland and rights groups accuse the Law and Justice party (PiS) of inciting hatred against immigrants to gain political power.

The leader of the PiS said that refugees from the Middle East might bring diseases and parasites into Poland during the 2015 migration crisis.

Many of today’s migrants come from Africa, Afghanistan, Iraq.

Kaminski claimed that while the government is not trying to stigmatize migrants, it was merely providing evidence showing that certain migrants may pose a risk to national security.

According to Kaminski, 50 of the 200 migrants interviewed by Polish security officials had been found to have links with extremism.

Poland and the EU accuse Belarus of encouraging migration from Iraq and Afghanistan to the EU’s exterior borders. This is to exert pressure on Brussels for imposing sanctions on Minsk in relation to rights abuses.

Rights groups and the European Commission fear that Poland might force the migrants back to Belarus at the border, violating their rights and increasing their risk.
