Chinese automaker GAC enters N. American market, but under Dodge marque By Reuters

BEIJING (Reuters) – Chinese automaker GAC is exporting China-made sport-utility vehicles to Mexico, in its first massive sales in the North America after years of planning to enter the key market. The cars will be sold under the Dodge brand.

GAC designed the SUVs “Dodge Journey”, which are then built at GAC’s Hangzhou plant. According to Stellantis, they will be sold at the Mexican dealership network.

GAC and Stellantis have a joint venture. Stellantis is having trouble selling Jeep-branded vehicles to China, the biggest market for autos in the world, and recently shut down one of its two factories.

Global automakers often sell cars under multiple brands, but this is more common with models they own than those of their partners.

GAC, one of few Chinese state-owned automakers, stated that it plans to build its own global brand and sell 4,000 vehicles in Mexico by year’s end.

GAC, like many Chinese businesses including Great Wall Motor has always aimed at selling vehicles in America. However, the Trump administration’s restrictions meant that the plans were slowing moving.

It stated that GAC will strengthen and extend cooperation with Stellantis…and continue to explore Mexico’s Market and spread out to other areas in order to create a base for the North American region. GAC is selling its cars in Asia and South America under its own brand.

GAC’s models are sold via a worldwide automaker’s channel. From 2018, Electric GAC car were sold at GAC Toyota venture showrooms and GAC Honda venture’s China showrooms.

Except for the GAC, an SUV that was originally sold under the Baojun marque and developed in China by SGMW, a joint venture of General Motors Co (NYSE) and SAIC Motor is available in South America. It’s known as Chevrolet logo.
