TEGUCIGALPA – On Saturday, a massive fire destroyed more than 200 homes and businesses in Guanaja (Honduran) and forced hundreds to flee.
Social media footage showed dramatic scenes of rows of houses on the seaside engulfed by flames, and wooden homes falling in Guanaja (a Caribbean island located about 70 kms (44 mi) from Honduras’ north coast).
The Honduran Air Force sent water to the island, but it was too late. Many homes had been destroyed. Video footage taken following the extinguishment of the flames showed numerous concrete buildings without windows or roofs.
Max Gonzales (Minister of National System for Risk Management and National Contingencies) stated that “we can confirm we do not have any human losses, but large material losses.”
Gonzales reported that the fire caused 90 house-level destructions and 120 other damage, in addition to injuries for four others.
Residents struggled to control the fire as it broke out just before sunrise. The island doesn’t have any firefighting services.
Guanaja is the third of the three bay Islands in Guanaja. Here, divers and snorkelers come to view dolphins and large coral reefs.
