UK could issue more temporary visas to solve lorry driver shortage, Johnson says By Reuters

LONDON, (Reuters) – Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister said Saturday that he will continue to review immigration laws and would not exclude issuing temporary visas to ease a shortage of tanker drivers which led to fuel shortages.
Britain announced last week that it will issue temporary visas to 5,000 truck drivers from abroad and 5,500 poultry workers. This is to address acute labour shortages, which have caused disruptions in fuel supply and hampered food production.
Britain’s Road Haulage Association says that there are currently around 100,000 unemployed drivers in the UK. The shortage is due to a lack of drivers and workers, an epidemic that has halted driver training and testing for nearly a year, as well as new immigration rules, which have prevented drivers from being hired from Europe.
Johnson spoke to journalists during a visit at a hospital and said that he did not rule out the possibility for more temporary visas being issued.
“What we now have is a system to allow us control immigration. That gives us flexibility. Johnson indicated that Johnson could open our markets to the public if necessary, although we would keep everything under review.
According to the government, 200 personnel from military tanks will be delivering fuel starting Monday.
Johnson stated that Johnson did not want to return to the situation where road haulage was sustained by low-wage immigration.
