(Reuters) – The number of deaths from COVID-19 in the world has risen to 5 million, according to a Reuters tally. This is due to the Delta variant, which causes a spike in death, primarily among unvaccinated.

More than half of the world has yet to receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to Our World in Data https://ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations.

It took almost over a year for the COVID-19 death toll https://tmsnrt.rs/34pvUyi to hit 2.5 million, while the next 2.5 million deaths were recorded in 236 days, according to a Reuters analysis. Over half of global deaths that were recorded on a daily basis in seven days occurred in the United States.

An average global death rate of 8000 was reported every day over the past week. This equates to five deaths per minute.
