DUBLIN (Reuters), – Ireland is not expecting Britain to unilaterally void some clauses in Northern Ireland’s complicated post-Brexit commercial agreement, Simon Coveney, the Foreign Minister said.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, said Friday that the British government could trigger Article 16 if it fails to make adequate concessions regarding the Northern Ireland trade restrictions.

Article 16 of Britain’s EU Divorce Agreement, which triggers Article 16 would be a significant step in the escalated dispute. It could also lead to significant retaliatory actions.

Article 16 gives each side the right to unilaterally request to be exempted from certain terms in the event that they prove to be unexpectedly detrimental, but it does not allow either side the option to abandon the protocol.

Coveney stated that he believed the British government was unlikely to invoke Article 16 on Saturday.

He said, “It would have a hugely problematic forward step in relations between the UK government & the EU institutions at an actual time when we are trying build trust.”
