STOCKHOLM – Lars Vilks (Swedish artist) was fatally injured in a vehicle accident near Markaryd in southern Sweden on Sunday.
Vilks was 75 years old and had lived under police protection ever since the drawings were published. Vilks was riding in a patrol vehicle when it collided into a truck. The deaths of two officers also occurred.
This was a tragic incident. “It is important that all of us do our best to investigate the circumstances surrounding this collision.
“Initially, there’s nothing to indicate that anyone else is involved.
Most Muslims view any portrayal of the founders or followers of Islam as offensive.
Vilks was under constant police surveillance since publication of the cartoons. His house was set on fire and a bounty placed upon his head.
One person was murdered in Copenhagen, Denmark (2015, 25th anniversary) at Vilks’s meeting to commemorate the Iranian Fatwa against Salman Rushdie.
Vilks was widely considered to be the target.
Vilks claimed that the cartoons were not meant to offend Muslims. They are intended to criticize political correctness in art.
