WASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. Democratic Senators and Republican Senators urged Joe Biden to expel 300 Russian diplomats.

Leaders of the Senate intelligence and foreign relations committees, Democrats Bob Menendez & Mark Warner, and Republicans Jim Risch & Marco Rubio, suggested that there would be a significant escalation to the ongoing dispute about embassy staffing in the midst tension between Washington and Moscow.

Russia had in August prohibited the U.S. embassies in Moscow to retain, hire, or contract Russian staff. Guards were the only exception. The State Department stated that the mission was forced to lay off 182 employees as well as many contractors.

According to senators, this means that there are less than 100 U.S. diplomats working in Russia as compared to 400 Russian diplomats throughout the United States.

It is not acceptable that there be a disproportionality of diplomatic representation. In a letter addressed to Biden, the senators stated that Russia should issue sufficient visas for the United States to reach parity in terms of the number American diplomats working in Russia with the Russian diplomats.

They suggested that Biden expelling up to 300 Russian diplomats if Moscow fails to do so.

The White House and State Department didn’t immediately reply to our request for comment.
