Rescues underway after flash flooding in parts of Alabama By Reuters

(Reuters] – Roads and rescue efforts were underway in many areas near Birmingham, Alabama late Wednesday, after heavy rains flooded portions of the state. A flash flood emergency was issued by the Weather Department for several counties.

Birmingham’s National Weather Service (NWS), said that numerous people have been saved from their vehicles stuck in water. They also stated that roads and homes were inundated by rains.

On Wednesday night, the NWS issued an emergency flash flood warning for Shelby and Jefferson counties in Alabama. Weather stations measured 5-10 inches (13-25 cm), of rainfall in one day.

Although heavy rain has stopped at the moment, runoff continues to cause significant flooding with major consequences. In other areas, the rain will continue well into the evening,” NWS stated in a tweet on Thursday morning.

CNN reports that Birmingham received an average of 3.34inches of rain in October. That means certain areas got twice the amount of rainfall as they receive during a single month.

CNN’s Jim Coker stated that there have been numerous water rescues and people stuck in cars who were saved by firefighters and police. There has also been damage reports about trees on roads and on homes.

Alabama advised residents not to travel and to keep their houses as they were, in addition the weather forecast.
