JOHANNESBURG, (Reuters) – South Africa should manage its shift away from coal-fired power generation systematically and avoid rushing to switch to renewable energy sources. This was the advice of Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s Mining and Energy Minister.

“I don’t believe in coal forever, I am saying… When asked about the impact of China’s promise not to build any new coal-fired power plants abroad, Mantashe said that he was saying “let’s manage our transition” rather than getting emotional. “We don’t consider ourselves a developing economy. There aren’t any alternative resources,” he said.
