PARIS (Reuters). Despite data-rigging accusations against Kristalina Georgiaeva, International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva not directly implicating her. This was according to a French Finance Ministry source on Monday.

Over Monday’s opening of the IMF-World Bank annual meeting, which will last for a week, there are claims that she forced World Bank staff members to alter data in order to improve China’s ranking as a “Doing Business”.

Georgieva strongly denies the claims, dating back to 2017.

People familiar with the plan said that the IMF’s 24 member board will meet Monday to discuss Georgieva’s future. This was after they met with Georgieva and her law firm.

The source from the French Finance Ministry stated that “our opinion is that most elements are on-the-table, and (and) that the report by the law firm does not specify precise elements that would call the director general into doubt,”

According to the source, France gave support for the director general. “We would like to make a decision today, which the board indicated it was going to do, so that we can continue the IMF’s work,” the source stated.

France, along with other European countries, supported Georgieva on Friday to finish her term as IMF chief. Meanwhile, U.S. officials wanted more time to examine the different accounts regarding data irregularities.

Europe’s support is crucial since the IMF chief was traditionally chosen by European countries, while the U.S. administration nominates the president of the World Bank.
