Maersk suspends five crew members as it investigates alleged sexual assault By Reuters

COPENHAGEN, (Reuters – The largest shipping company in the world A.P. Moller Maersk announced that five of its employees have been suspended in the wake of an investigation into sexual assaults on one of its ships owned by a U.S. affiliate. The company said it would work closely with American authorities.

In an email statement, Bill Woodhour, chief executive officer of Maersk Line, Limited stated that they do all they can to make sure workplaces, even vessels, are safe and inviting.

Maersk Line, Limited, a U.S. subsidiary of A.P. It stated that Moller-Maersk is collaborating with the U.S. government in support of military, government, and humanitarian missions.

Five crew members were suspended as part of this investigation, MLL stated in the statement.

The company stated that it worked with U.S. labor unions. Merchant Marine Academy, (USMMA), is located in Kings Point. This academy was overseen by the U.S. Maritime Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation.

In a Oct. 2 letter addressed to Kings Point, Polly Trottenberg (Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of Transportation) and Lucinda LESSLEY, Acting Administrator of Maritime Administration wrote, “We are writing today to offer our support to the person who shared her story of a sex assault that occurred during Sea Year.”

The academy runs “Sea Year”, a program where cadets learn about ships and Maersk Line, Limited. This programme has trained 732 Cadets since 2017.

The spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration, (MARAD) stated that it had been made aware of the incident and added that U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Superintendent, had referred the matter to Coast Guard Investigative Service in September 28.

The spokesperson stated that there is no tolerance for any form of sexual assault or harassment in USMMA or the maritime industry.
