MOSCOW, (Reuters) – Russia’s Sputnik light vaccine is 70% effective against Delta virus three months after it was administered. This statement was made Wednesday by the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

It said that the data, which was provided by Gamaleya Institute to medical website medRxiv, were submitted prior to a peer review. The data is based upon 28,000 people who had received a dose Sputnik Light. This compares with a group of 5.6 millions who weren’t vaccinated.

These data are important as Russia struggles to combat rising infections and hesitancy regarding vaccines at home while also struggling with better-established vaccines. Pfizer (NYSE:) Moderna AstraZeneca and (NASDAQ) are making millions of dosages.

Many countries around the globe are considering or deploying third doses of Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, or booster shots, to certain populations, especially those who have weakened immune systems. However, there’s no agreement among scientists as to how widely they should be administered.

Sputnik Light will work almost as well as Russia’s two-shot flagship vaccine Sputnik V as a booster.

RDIF claimed that Sputnik Light is over 83% effective against infections and 94% effective against hospitalisation.

Kirill Dmitriev of the RDIF told Reuters that he expects Sputnik Light eventually to be the primary Russian vaccine against COVID-19.

Dmitriev stated that Sputnik Light may eventually become the primary vaccine. “Eventually we believe that Sputnik Light will be the major vaccine in one year.”
