(Reuters] -The United States intends to host seven offshore wind auctions within the next four years. It will also expand its ambitions to other areas such as in the Gulf of Mexico or off California’s coast, a Biden Administration official stated Wednesday.

This announcement is made by the Administration as it looks to support the emerging industry in its plan to combat climate change through decarbonizing the energy sector by 2035.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland stated that the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, a division of Interior Department, which oversees offshore wind permits, would hold seven lease sales in 2025. This was during an address at an event for the industry in Boston.

Also, the New York Bight is being pursued for sales. It’s a region of shallow water between New Jersey (New Jersey) and Long Island (New York), and the Central Atlantic. The majority of offshore wind leases for waters east coast of Northeastern States have so far been granted.

Haaland spoke at American Clean Power Association’s wind energy conference, “I look forward to our future together”

Joe Biden set earlier in the year a goal of deploying 30 gigawatts offshore wind energy, enough to power 10,000,000 homes by 2030. BOEM plans to examine at least 16 offshore-wind project plans before 2025.

For a country which only allowed the first commercial-scale offshore turbine farm in this year’s fiscal year, such a buildout would be very fast.

Haaland stated that the government would decide in the next few weeks on the second largest project of the country, Orsted’s South Fork windfarm in waters between Rhode Island (OTC) and Long Island.
