Alibaba launches new server chip to boost its cloud business

GUANGZHOU, China — Chinese e-commerce giant AlibabaOn Tuesday, a new chip was launched by the company to increase its cloud computing business as well as compete with U.S. counterparts such as Amazon. Amazon

Customers won’t be able to directly buy the chip or servers. Alibaba’s cloud computing customers will instead purchase services that are based on this latest technology. These servers can be used for storage and artificial intelligence.

It was not clear when these services, which are built on the latest server and chip, would be offered to customers.

Alibaba won’t be producing the semiconductor, but it will design it.
