Covid vaccine boosters are now available. Here’s who’s eligible for Pfizer, Moderna and J&J’s shots

Nearly 100,000,000 people in the United States are eligible for Covid booster shot immediately after extra Covid doses were authorized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ModernaAnd Johnson & Johnson‘s vaccines Thursday night.
This agency decision allows fully-vaccinated people to combine boosters from different manufacturers. Research from the National Institutes of Health has shown that it’s safe and effective for them to do so. PfizerAnd BioNTechOn Sept. 24, a wide range of boosters for’s use were approved in the U.S.
Approximately 11.6 million people across the nation have received boosters. The CDC approved them for tens to millions more. Not everyone can be eligible. Based on the first round, here’s who is eligible to receive the additional doses in America.
Pfizer-BioNTech
According to Thursday’s data presentation before the CDC advisory committee, more than 47 million Pfizer vaccine patients who had received their shots within six months of each other became eligible for a booster on Friday. This includes:
- Persons 65+
- Any adult between the ages of 18 and 64 with cancer, dementia, heart disease or HIV.
- Persons 18 years and over who reside or work in long-term care facilities, shelters for the homeless or prisons or other congregate settings.
- For those aged 18 years or more, frontline staff are exposed to greater Covid risk due their jobs. This includes teachers, police officers, and supermarket workers.
Moderna
According to the CDC presentation, more than 39.1million Moderna vaccine recipients received their shots no later than six months ago and are eligible for a booster on Friday. Pfizer and the CDC used the same mRNA technology to develop their Covid vaccines. The CDC presented the Moderna recipients criteria as Pfizer. They also include.
- Persons 65+
- Any adult between the ages of 18 and 64 with cancer, dementia, heart disease or HIV.

Johnson & Johnson
The CDC adopted a slightly different criteria for J&J’s one-shot Covid vaccine, making almost 13 million recipients eligible as of Friday. It includes
- All adults who were vaccinated with J&J’s Covid vaccine at least two months ago, instead of six months with Pfizer and Moderna.
- All adult J&J recipients are eligible for a booster even if they don’t have underlying medical conditions or work in a profession or live where there’s a higher risk of Covid.
