(Reuters) – The trial of Ahmaud and three other white men, charged with the murder of Black jogger Ahmaud, 25 in Brunswick (NYSE) (Georgia), February 2020, is currently in progress.

These are the facts:

WHO IS CHARGED

Gregory McMichael (65), his son Travis McMichael (35) and William “Roddie Bryan (52) are all facing charges for murder, aggravated attack, false imprisonment.

WAS IT A SUCCESS?

Arbery was an avid jogger and ran a mile on Sunday. He crossed the four-lane highway to reach Satilla Shores.

Police were told by the defendants that Arbery looked suspiciously like a burglar. Travis McMichael and Gregory McMichael took guns to chase Arbery’s white pickup truck. Bryan watched them speed by, and he joined the chase in his pickup truck. Bryan also recorded part of the interaction between Arbery and McMichaels.

According to police, Arbery was stopped by the trucks of his accomplices. Bryan’s cell phone video captures Arbery wrestling with Travis McMichael, who pointed a shotgun at him before shooting him three times. He then fell to the streets after McMichael turned his back and ran.

According to defense lawyers, Travis McMichael was acting in self-defense. Arbery was attacking McMichael when he grabbed his shotgun barrel.

A few lawyers who were not part of the case speculate that Arbery could have grabbed the gun in an attempt to save his life. The men were accused of unlawfully following him, illegally taking him into custody with their pickup trucks, and intending to harm him “with malice beforehand.”
