In the 2021 season of the MLB, nine no-hitters were recorded. This breaks the previous record of eight that was set 137 year ago.

Atlanta was part of a controversy that went beyond baseball. The MLB moved the 2021 All-Star Game after Georgia lawmakers passed a strict voting law. Denver from Atlanta

It received both praises and criticism for its decision. President Joe Biden supported MLB’s move. Braves owner Liberty MediaAtlanta tourism officials claimed losses of $100 millions. The league was sued by a conservative group for over $1 billion in damages.

Marty Conway, a former MLB executive called the 2021 World Series “rich irony” due to the presence of the teams. The former MLB executive Marty Conway pointed out that Rob Manfred (the MLB commissioner) “has the World Series trophy presented in Houston or Atlanta” and could be subject to negative reactions.

Conway believes that extra drama about the Astros or Braves might increase MLB viewership. Conway is a former Special Assistant under ex-MLB commissioner Peter Ueberroth.

Conway now works as a McDonough School of Business professor at Georgetown University. “You need drama, characters and that is what lends itself to the tune-ins.

MLB will determine if storylines are able to help World Series viewers return to pre-pandemic levels.

Los Angeles Dodgers won last year their first World Series title since 1988. However, the series’ six games were canceled because of overflowing sports broadcasts and consumerism. average 9.7 million viewers. That included 9.1 million for Game 1 — the least-watched World Series game ever.

2019 World Series Attracted 23 million viewersThe Astros will host the Washington Nationals in Game 7. Average viewing audience for the series was 13 million.

On average, approximately 14 million people watched the five-game 2018 World Series matchup between Red Sox players and Dodgers. On average, a total of 1.4 million viewers saw the Astros win over the Dodgers in 2017 World Series. 18.9 million viewers over seven games.

Manfred considers himself to be a labor optimist.

The league must start to worry about labor problems by the end of the World Series.

December 1 is the expiration of MLB’s collective bargaining arrangement with its players. A strike could occur if both sides fail to reach an agreement on a new or extended deal.

The 1994 strike was the longest ever recorded in MLB history, and it caused the cancellation of the World Series for the first time since 1904.

Additional playoff games will be a major issue, and this could lead to talks on dividing income. Manipulation of service time — which helps to determine how much players can make — is a concern, especially after a former Seattle Mariners executive admitted to cheating the system. It is being debated whether a universal designated batter should be added.

Conway indicated that MLB was approaching “difficult Winter” due to intensified labor negotiations. Corporate sponsors may freeze revenue from the league or team while they negotiate a new labor deal.

Manfred described himself as a labor optimist earlier in the month during a Sports Business Journal conference.

Manfred must shine in this area of the MLB business. Bud Selig was the former MLB manager. Manfred oversaw labor relations. He prevented lockouts in the past 26 years.

While the commissioner refused to comment on recent negotiations with Tony Clark of MLBPA, Clark predicted that an agreement could be made by December 1.

Conway refused to answer a question about whether he believed a deal would be reached by the projected date. Conway explained that the union would be able to negotiate a better deal for spring training. The owners of MLB games could be in danger and lose their money at that time.

However, even though MLB may be subject to lockouts it is unlikely that they will replicate the 1994 lockout.

“The numbers, in terms of what players are making now and what franchise valuations are — I don’t think that’s something they want to play roulette with,” Conway said.

MLB’s Regional Problems

MLB’s media rights will remain secure for at least the next 10 years. World Series viewing is not an issue. These deals include the WarnerMedia deal worth over $3 billion. Fox Sports, which owns World Series rights, will provide approximately $728 million per year for the MLB.

Fox also saw a 5.9million viewers this year thanks to the Field of Dreams broadcast. The movie-themed MLB game will be played again in 2022.

ESPN has dropped the weekday MLB package from their renewal. But, it faces a bigger problem with regional sports.

Sinclair owns local rights to 14 MLB teams via its Bally Sports channel and pay sports leagues more than $1 billion in rights feesIt is. However, it does not currently have any streaming strategy for cord-cutting.

Manfred blasted Sinclair’s ambitions to launch streaming service. He claimed that Sinclair didn’t have sufficient rights to create digital options for MLB customers. Manfred said that the streaming rights were not cheap.

MLB isn’t ideal about this issue. It still relies on regional networks to provide exposure for its games. MLB.TV is its streaming service that uses out-of-market feeds from regional sports networks.

MLB claims that more than 10 million minutes of MLB’s season-long service were consumed. Playfly Sports Marketing Company stated that RSNs make up 85% for MLB viewership.

Because MLB rights offer the largest ad inventory during the 162-game season, they are the cornerstone of the networks. This revenue allows RSNs to stay afloat.

Michael Schreiber (Playfly CEO) called MLB’s local viewership stable. His belief that sports affinity is the “one thing that will last itself” was reinforced by Schreiber. It is now up to you to rebuild the media marketplace.

Georgetown’s Conway said, “That will affect the local franchises most,” referring to revenue from local media rights. They are essential in all of the major baseball markets. Because of uncertainty about the future, it is important to me that this be our number one concern.
