KABUL (Reuters). – The Taliban government announced Wednesday that officials from Turkmenistan would visit Kabul next week in order to continue work on the TAPI pipeline, which connects Central Asia’s energy-rich country to Pakistan and India.

It is anticipated that the pipeline will transport 33 billion cubic metres (bcm), of gas each year, along 1,800km (1,125 mi) route from Galkynysh in Russia to Fazilka, India’s largest city, near the Pakistani border.

Mohammad Issa Akhund (acting minister of petroleum and mines in the Taliban government) stated in a statement that “We have worked hard for some time” and was ready to take pride when starting work on the TAPI Project.

It will connect Afghanistan to Pakistan by running from the Turkmenistan-Norwest border, via the city of Herat and south into Kandahar.

The statement stated that Akhund had met with the Turkmenistan ambassador before a two-day delegation visiting the country. This visit will begin on Saturday.

This project was initiated in Afghanistan by the Taliban in 2018 as they were fighting for the Western-backed government at Kabul. However, the Taliban offered their support to a project that it considered a crucial future part of Afghanistan’s economic infrastructure.

Afghanistan, which is suffering from chronic energy shortages due to its dependence on natural gas, will take about 5%. The rest of the gas will be split equally between India and Pakistan. Kabul could also earn hundreds of million dollars per year in transit fees.
